Logic fail

So I was reading an article about knife legalities in NYC area.  I'm all about what they are saying, but I really am saddened by the common misuse of statistics just to make a point in an article.
The DA’s office claims homicides and knife use in non-fatal stabbings to be a serious problem in Manhattan. Yet according to the National Safety Council – in your lifetime you have a greater chance [1 in 81,701] of getting killed by lightning than residents of Manhattan had last year of getting killed with a knife [1 in 90,503].  Comparing 1 in 81,701 for a LIFETIME vs 1 in 90,503 for a YEAR.  An astute reader would realize that you have a far greater chance of being stabbed in Manhattan than getting struck by lightning in one year.  The reality here, we need to stop reading to absorb or to reaffirm something we believe, and read with critical thought.
